CLARA WOOD

GILDFORD Clara Greta (Zabel) Wood, 97, died Saturday, Dec. 9, 2000 at a Chester nursing home of natural causes.

Funeral services will be 11 a.m. Wednesday at St. Paul Lutheran Church in Havre. Burial will follow at Highland Cemetery in Havre.

Wood was born Aug. 31, 1903 in Balfour, N.D. to Augusta Louise Martin and Gustav Ferdinand Zabel.

She received her early school in North Dakota. The family moved to Montana in 1917 and purchased a farm near Gildford. She finished her formal education at the Zenia School located between Kremlin and Gildford.

On Sept. 30, 1922, she married John Henry Wood at Havre. They worked on the Zabel farm until they acquired their own place. They lived on their Gildford area farm until 1940, when they bought a home in town. In their later years, they enjoyed spending winters in San Diego, Calif.

He died in 1985 and she moved into a Chester nursing home in 1990.

She was a member of the St. John's Lutheran Church in Rudyard for years and then transferred her membership to St. Paul Lutheran in Havre. She was a 60-year member of the American Legion Auxiliary.

Wood's hobbies included embroidery, crocheting, cooking and canning. She made fancy doilies over the years. In her quiet time, she enjoyed playing cards, especially Kings-in-the-Corners.

She was preceded in death by her parents; husband, John Henry Wood; son, Henry Wood, brothers, Fred, Edward and Gust Zabel; sisters, Alice Beatty, Meta Braihan, Alma Gerber, Lulu Kidd, Caroline Zimmerman, Edna Mangels and Violet Shorey.

Survivors include her daughter, Betty Marshall of Chester; sister, Helen Moody of Seattle; grandchildren, Wayne Wood, Leland Wood, Delbert Wood, Tony Marshall, Butch Marshall, Ken Marshall, Scot Marshall, Lynn Lonbeck, Kathy Wood, Janet Baird and Jodine Sheppard; 26 great-grandchildren; eight great-great-grandchildren.

Memorials may be made to the Yellowstone Boys and Girls Ranch or to a donor's choice.
