Havre celebrates Teen Day with a wide range of activities

By Crystal Thompson

Havre will celebrate Montana Teen Day with a range of activities for local teens, during the week of Feb. 4 -9.

Montana Teen Day, which is observed Feb. 6, is organized by The Healthy Mothers/Healthy Babies PATH (Promoting Action for Teen Health) project, in conjunction with the Montana Department of Health and Human Services' Child Adolescent and Community Health Program.

Havre's Teen Day, which was turned into "Teen Week" by members of the local teen day committee, will feature activities such as teen movie night, church and family teen night, and teen ski day. On Wednesday, Teen Day, there will be informational booths set up at the High School and the Middle School which will feature literature on teen issues.

Teen Week will come to a close with a concert at the Havre High Auditorium featuring local rock group, "The Unknowns." Opening for "The Unknowns" will be Havre's teen girl group "Wrapped in Cellophane." Cost of the concert will be $1 with a non-perishable food item. The concert will be open to all 13-18 year olds with school ID.

The local Teen Week activities are sponsored by members of the Hill County Health Department, the Hill County Mentoring Program-Havre VISTAs, the Havre Resources Development Council, as well as local businesses and community members.

Everyone is encouraged to recognize Montana Teen Day by celebrating the teens who make up their classrooms, youth groups, families, and workforces. Letters are being sent out to local business and religious leaders, schools and community members to encourage them to recognize the teenagers who are all around them, and who may not receive the recognition they need and deserve. Teen Day provides opportunity to find good in all teens.

The Teen Day committee is asking anyone who knows a teen worthy of recognition, to nominate them as Teen of the Day. Five winners each day will be recognized in the Havre Daily News and on the radio during Teen Week. Submit nominations with the following information: Teen's name, parent/guardian name, and a short summary of the teen. Send nominations to: Teen of the Day, 1006 Lincoln Avenue, Havre, MT 59501 or email to hill-nurse-smith@juno.com.
