Hays-Lodgepole rallies to victory over Box Elder

Shambo scores 23 points to lift T-birds to 70-59 win over Bears

Facing a 10-point deficit early in the third quarter last

night at the Havre High gym, Shawn Shambo and his

Hays-Lodgepole teammates decided they had finally had

enough.

Shambo scored a game-high 23 points 11 in the third

period to lead the Thunderbirds to a 70-59

come-from-behind victory over Box Elderin the first round of

the District 9C divisional basketball tournament.

In Thursday's other tournament pairing, Gage Brumwell

scored 19 points to pace Big Sandy's 77-47 rout of Turner in

a loser-out contest.

HAYS-LODGEPOLE 70, BOX ELDER 59 After Craig Gopher

converted a three-point play to put the Bears ahead 38-28

with six minutes remaining in the third period,

Hays-Lodgepole scored 16 of the next 23 points over the next

four minutes to close within 45-44.

Gopher, who finished with a game-high 24 points, made two

more free throws, but Shambo made a 3-pointer and added two

free throws of his own to give the T-birds a 49-47 lead.

H-L outscored Box Elder 19-10 in the final period to pull

away.

Also for the T-birds, Willie Kirkaldie scored 17 points and

Russel Doney added 12.

Joe Don Demontiney added 12 points for the Bears.

BIG SANDY 77, TURNER 47 Brumwell made 9 of 11 attempts

from the floor to lead the Pioneers, who made 32 of 63

attempts.

Jackson Burke had 12 points, and Daniel Weaver and Chris

Yirsa each added 11 for Big Sandy, which led 23-8 after the

first quarter.
