The Havre S.U.N.S. (Students United for New Successes) alternative high school seems to have started a new annual tradition.
For the second year in a row, S.U.N.S. students have gone out to read to elementary students in honor of the birthday of Theodore Geisel, aka Dr. Seuss.
S.U.N.S. Director Debby Kirby said they are definitely planning to do this again next year.
"And even more than annually," she said.
Kirby said the people in the Havre Head Start program definitely would like to have the S.U.N.S. students come back again before next year.
"And the students really enjoyed the elementary schools and would really like to go back next year," she said.
Kirby said the students went to the library to pick out books to use, and even picked out some older, non-Dr. Seuss books to read to the older elementary students. But, she said, the older kids requested Seuss as well.
The S.U.N.S. students spent Thursday, March 1, reading to the Head Start students at the Head Start building and at Devlin and Lincoln-McKinley elementary schools, from about 10 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. They spent Friday, March 2, Geisel's 97th birthday, reading at all four elementary buildings. They started at Lincoln-McKinley at 11:15 a.m, Sunnyside at 12:30 p.m., Devlin at 1:10 p.m. and finished with Highland Park at 2:20 p.m. Kirby said about 11 or 12 S.U.N.S. students went out each day.
