Havre ends both games early with mercy rule
The Havre Comets scored 31 runs in two games and benefited from crafty pitching in a two-game sweep of Malta in an American Legion baseball doubleheader Sunday at Legion Field.
Havre won the first game 17-2 in a game shortened to five innings by a 10-run mercy rule. The Comets won the second game 14-4 in six innings.
In the opener, Steve Heberly went 2-for-4 with three RBI, and Lance Sapp added a three-run double for the Comets.
Ian Spencer was 1-for-3 with a two-run single, and Cory Junck added a 2-for-4 effort with an RBI.
Heberly, Daine Solomon and Ben Mader all scored three runs for the Comets.
Havre starter Ian Spencer struck out six and didn't allow a hit or base on balls in three innings of work. He sat down Malta batters in order in the first three innings before being replaced by Mark Benjamin in the top of the fourth.
In the second game, Tyson Roe went 2-for-3 and Solomon and Bobby Bergren each went 2-for-4 for the Comets in the 10-run victory.
Bergren finished with two RBI, and Adam Jensen added a two-run single for Havre.
Solomon also scored three times, and Heberly added a run-scoring triple.
Heberly, Mader and Tyler Thompson combined to strike out 11 Malta batters.
