Doors will open at 9 a.m. on June 1, in the small Missouri River community of Virgelle for the "Touch the Trail of Lewis and Clark" anniversary celebration.
The celebration marks the passage of Lewis and Clark and the Corps of Discovery through the Virgelle valley on June 1, 1805 almost 200 years ago.
The Virgelle Merc-Canoe Co., Inc. is sponsoring a day-long list of activities and events to mark this special occasion including:
Postage stamp cancellations from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. in cooperation with the United States Postal Service,
Journal Readings from the journals of Lewis and Clark by the Big Sandy High School Speech and Debate Club,
Bru's Chuck Wagon serving buffalo burgers, beer sausage and other items from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m.,
Stone-Age Show featuring live performances by Bob Garritson depicting the use of primitive tools and weapons from 1-3 p.m.
Rendezvous of mountain men, trappers and black powder enthusiasts who will have a camp set up at the town site in preparation for a 3-day float along the Missouri River,
Primitive Cooking demonstrations by Cindy Torok,
Primitive Tailoring by Vicki Gondeiro demonstrating methods of making clothing during the time of Lewis and Clark.
