Big inning caps Northstars win over Belgrade

BELGRADE The Havre Northstars scored eight runs in the top of the fourth inning on their way to a 11-1 seven-inning win to eliminate the host Belgrade Bandits from the state tournament at Medina Field.

David Knight got the Havre rally started in the fourth with an RBI double to left center field. Mike Kellam followed with an RBI single, giving Havre a 2-1 lead.

Havre took advantage of two Belgrade errors in the next three batters, before Jordan Anderson had an RBI double, and Jared Boyce highlighted the inning with a two-run double.

Havre had six hits in the inning and scored eight runs, six of which were unearned.

The Northstars scored three more runs in the top of the fifth to secure the 10-run win.

Kellam had an RBI double in the inning and Tyler Vandermars added an RBI single.

Boyce tossed a complete game, giving up only six hits and one run. He did not walk a batter and struck out nine.

Kellam ended up with three hits in the game, two RBI and two runs scored. Anderson, Vandermars, Knight and Sheppard each had two hits for the Northstars.

BITTERROOT 9, LETHBRIDGE 8 The Bitterroot Red Sox scored three runs in the bottom of the ninth, capped by a game-winning RBI single by Joe Franklin to defeat the Lethbridge Miners 9-8 and advance to the championship game.

After the Miners scored two runs in the top of the ninth to give them an 8-6 lead, Bitterroot's Shane Fisk reached on a two-out error that allowed two runs to score and tie the game at 8-all.

Fisk advanced to third on the errant throw and scored the winning run on Franklin's single.

Kyle Melton was 3-for-5 with an RBI and two runs scored to pace the Red Sox. Teammate Kevin Lokken finished 2-for-3 with an RBI and one run scored.
