Three local swimmers from the Havre Lions swim team recently traveled to Maui, Hawaii, to compete in the Western Zone Swim Championships.
Maureen Porter, Elizabeth Stuker and Scott Robinson were among the 22 Montana swimmers who made the trip. Montana placed 11th overall out of 17 teams, which included teams from Idaho, Washington, Oregon, California, Colorado, Wyoming, Alaska and Hawaii.
More than 900 swimmers qualified for the meet, which coach Chris O'Donnell says will benefit her swimmers.
"The trip was a great experience for the kids," she said. "They each got personal bests in the events they swam, which is great for their first really big meet."
O'Donnell said her swimmers placed around the middle of the pack individually in each event. Each event varied from 40 swimmers to 60 or more, depending on the age group and the event.
The swimmers arrived in Hawaii on Aug. 4, three days before the meet was scheduled to begin, and left two days after the meet ended, allowing them to enjoy Hawaii.
"The trip was a lot of fun," O'Donnell said. "Just being in Hawaii was a big thing."
Each swimmer placed in six events, with Robinson and Stuker placing 20th in the 100 breaststroke and 200 breaststroke, respectively. Robinson added a 21st place finish in the 50 freestyle and Stuker finished 21st in the 100 breaststroke. Porter also added a 21st place finish in the 50 freestyle.
