The Havre City Council on Monday night voted to support the widening of U.S. Highway 2 to four lanes.
The council voted unamimously to back the project after hearing from state Department of Transportation director David Galt and state Sen. Sam Kitzenberg. Kitzenberg accused Galt of trying to turn council members against the project with information about its costs.
Galt told the council that widening the highway to four lanes between Havre and Chinook would cost $21 million, compared with $12 million for upgrading that section to a 40-foot two-lane road.
"The Department of Transportation stands ready to work towards a four-lane highway," Galt said. "It's just that there are significant consequences to making that decision."
