COQUILLE, Ore. William A. Schmockel, 90, died Monday, Oct. 29, 2001, in Coquille of a heart attack.
A memorial gathering will be held at 3 p.m. Wednesday at the Coquille Senior Center.
Schmockel was born Oct. 1, 1911, in Havre to William J. and Wallis (Klatzel) Schmockel. He graduated from high school in Havre and served in the U.S. Army during World War II. As a young boy, he worked at a Havre newspaper setting type.
On Aug. 2, 1937, he married Kathleen Kennedy in Havre. They moved to Coquille in 1938, where he worked at the Roxy Confectionery. He worked at Smith Woods Lumber Company and joined the Army in 1943 and served in the south Pacific and later the Japan occupation. He spent the remainder of his working years at Coos Bay Lumber and Georgia-Pacific. After retiring at 55, he worked for several years as a flagger for Westates Flaggers.
He enjoyed Dixieland Jazz and learned to dance in his 80s. He was a loving husband and father and will be sorely missed.
He was preceded in death by his parents.
Survivors include his wife, Kathleen Schmockel of Coquille; daughter and her husband, Mary and Jerry Conner of Coquille; sister, Tillie Patterson of Havre.
