CASHMERE, Wash. Helen (Oliver) Gjullin, 90, died Thursday, Dec. 14, 2000 at a convalescent center in Cashmere, Wash. of natural causes.
The family plans to scatter Gjullin's ashes near Point Reyes, Calif. next summer, near the spot where her husband's ashes were scattered 30 years ago.
Gjullin was born July 4, 1910 in Provo, Utah and was raised in Anaconda.
She attended Montana State College in Bozeman and earned a bachelor of arts degree in fine arts. At school, she met Robert W. Gjullin, an entomology student from Conrad. They were married on the shores of Georgetown Lake near Anaconda in June 1935.
Her artistic abilities led to her employment as a scientific illustrator for entomological publications.
The Gjullin's lived in north central Montana for several years. They owned Gjullin Truck and Tractor Co. in Harlem and Chinook. In 1958, she began work as a social worker at area Indian reservations. She also wrote plays produced by the Footlights Club at Northern Montana College and served as a swim team coach in Chinook.
In 1965, the family moved to California and she continued as a social worker with the Marin County Welfare Department. She retired in 1975 and traveled extensively in Europe and North Africa. She lived for a time in Paris, France.
She lived in Arlington, Va. from 1979 to 1982 and helped take care of her grandchild. She then moved to Cheyenne, Wyo. to help with her second grandchild. In 1984, she relocated to Wenatchee, Wash and tended to her third grandchild.
Gjullin enjoyed music, painting and sculpting. She was active in Wenatchee's area council on aging and continued to swim regularly until she was 87.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Robert W. Gjullin, who died in January 1971.
Survivors include her sons, Erik Gjullin of Rockville, Md. and Kurt Gjullin, Monitor, Wash.; sister, Harriet Hoefler of Los Gatos, Calif.; brothers, Jack Oliver of Reno, Nev. and Bob Oliver of Phoenix, Ariz.; three grandchildren.
