CLYDE C. SPRINGER
Clyde C. Springer, 82, Havre, died Saturday, Jan. 13, 2001 of natural causes at a Havre hospital. Cremation has taken place.
Memorial services will be at 2 p.m. Friday at the Holland and Bonine Chapel with Pastor Rowlie Hutton officiating. Burial of cremated remains will take place at a private family service at a later date. A fellowship luncheon will follow the memorial service at the Sixth Avenue Christian Church.
Springer was born in Cottonwood to Claude C. and Blanche J. (Bjertens) Springer on Feb. 23, 1918. He attended Cottonwood School, North Mountain View School, and the LaSalle Correspondence School, obtaining an associate's degree in bookkeeping and accounting.
Springer married Ruth E. Higgins on Aug. 9, 1944. He was a staff sergeant in the U.S. Army from October 1942 to April 1946. He served in the European Theater. He was the Hill County Treasurer and Deputy Treasurer from 1947 to 1952. He was the parts man for Nelson Oldsmobile/GMC from 1952 to 1955. He was the office manager for Baltrusch Construction from 1955 to 1980, retiring after 25 years of service.
Springer was a member of the Veterans of Foreign Wars, and the Society of the 30th Infantry Regiment. He was a decorated soldier, a long-time volunteer with the Boy Scouts of America, an accomplished hunter, an expert fly fisherman, and an avid outdoorsman. He spent time in the Civilian Conservation Corps., worked on the crew that brought the first phone service through Glacier National Park, and fought the Heaven's Peak fire in the early 1930s.
He enjoyed his family and friends, liked reading history, and enjoyed watching Major League sports, fast-pitch softball, and the Havre Band Festivals bands, especially the bagpipers. He attended the First Church of Christ, Scientist, and most recently, the Sixth Avenue Christian Church. He enjoyed bird watching, telling masterful stories, keeping in touch with Army buddies, and growing beautiful roses.
Springer was preceded in death by his parents; sisters, Beulah Brown, Delores Allyn, and Vera Swinney; brothers, Vurl, Glen, Ruel and Lynn.
Survivors include his wife of Havre; sons, Alan Springer of Kellogg, Idaho, Gary Springer of Havre; sisters, Eva McIntosh of Havre, Betty Anderson of Harlem, and Ila Knudson of Cranbrook, British Columbia, Canada; brothers, Clifford Springer of Havre, Martin Springer of Big Sandy, and Fred Springer of Kremlin; four grandchildren; one great-granddaughter; many nieces and nephews.
Memorials may be made to a person's choice.
