Second-half effort leads Lights to win over 14th-ranked Saints

The Montana State University-Northern men's basketball

needed a complete team effort if it wanted to upset

14th-ranked Carroll College last night at Northern Gym.

Coach Tim Walker could not have been more pleased.

Six Northern players scored in double figures, and the

Lights' defense was stifling in the second half of a 99-91

victory over the Saints in a Frontier Conference basketball

game last night.

Northern improved to 6-7 in Frontier play and 12-15

overall. Carroll dropped to 10-3 in the conference and

absorbed just its fifth loss in 27 games overall.

Northern came out clicking offensively in the first half,

successfully converting 33 of 62 shots (55.2 percent) from

the floor. But the Lights still trailed at halftime 46-45 as

Carroll made 18 of 32 shots (56.3 percent) from the field.

But when Northern turned its defensive pressure up a notch

in the second half, Carroll's shooting dropped off

dramatically and the Lights began pulling away.

For the game, Northern made 33 of 62 field-goal attempts

(53.2 percent). Carroll, after its blistering shooting in

the first half, finished 35-for-71 (49.3 percent).

Mel Stubblefield paced the Lights with a great all-around

effort. The 6-foot senior guard totaled 17 points, five

rebounds, three steals and three assists in 26 minutes.

Northern's Bruce Stacy made five 3-pointers en route to 16

points, Keith Carothers had 15 points, and David Sawyer

added 14 points and eight rebounds. Josh Hays and Da'Vion

Famber tossed in 12 and 11 points, respectively, for the

Lights.

Northern made 9 of 16 three-point attempts (56.3 percent)

and finished 24-for-31 from the foul line (77.4 percent).

Carroll's J.D. Solomon, who is third in the Frontier in

scoring at 20.8 points a game, finished with 24 to lead the

Saints.

Carroll's Shane Gamradt, who leads the Frontier in assists

with better than seven per game, finished with seven last

night. But Northern did a good job applying pressure to the

Saints' point guard, forcing him into an unfamiliar five

turnovers.
