The annual regional math contest was held at Montana State University-Northern on Tuesday, March 13, between 9 a.m. and 12:30 p.m.
Schools in the region bring students to participate, each student taking three or four tests on the grades 7-9 level and on the grades 10-12 level. There are also team tests, with the teams made up of six students in the grade levels for each category. Northern has about 1,000-1,100 of the about 5000 students that participate in the state.
The math test staff grade the 4,000 to 5,000 tests that day, and the awards are given at a ceremony later in the day.
The top 15 percent of the students who take each test each receive a superior rating and the next 20 percent receive an honorable mention rating. The students' scores who received superior ratings at the regional level are forwarded to the state and their scores will be re-ranked with the top 15 percent getting superior ratings and the next 20 percent getting honorable mentions at the state level.
In the grade 10-12 division, Brad Benjamin of Fort Benton and Kattie M. Somerfeld of Power received the top rating for seniors in the area, and were awarded $200 scholarships by the Montana Council of Teachers of Mathematics.
Matthew T. Welch from Havre High School received the top rating for Class A, George O. Metzger of Chinook for Class B and Markus J. Hybner of Blue Sky won in Class C.
The top team for Class A was Tyler O. Croft, Carrie R. Flatau, Jenna R. Baltrusch, Russell L. McIntosh, Levi D. Mork and Jennifer L. Shakal of Havre High; for Class B it was Malta and Fort Benton, tied, with James E. Slade, Genevieve M. Ziegler, Becky L. Hoffman and Samantha L. Bagley for Malta and Rachel M. Honrud, Tai Takenaka, Sarah Ritland, Kristal A. Lohse and Janae Singer on the Fort Benton team.
KG Schools won in Class C, with Erika Hasszan, Abbie R. Toner, Scott C. Dees, Natalie M. Raettig, Kimberly S. Berg, Casey W. Crites on the team.
In the grade 7-9 division, Darren J. Verploegen of the Havre Public Schools won for Class A, Melanie H. Overcast from Chinook won for Class B and Cherry D. Tomsheck of North Toole County won for Class C.
The top teams were Seth Hinckley, Tisha Christopherson, Jeremy Giardina, Katon Gerky and Nikki M. Dibblee of the Havre Public Schools for Class A; Tiffany Cuerth, Marcus H. Birky, Monica B. Thackeray, Shardae M. Johnson, Naomi R. Oehmcke and Ralea J. McMaster of Chinook for Class B, and in Class C it was Turner, with Colin T. Joes, Robbie J. Litzinger, David J. Jones, Arden H. Mills and Brandon J. Simons on the team.
