Sande paces Pony girls

One look at the Havre girls golf team and Coach Keith Evenson sees some good news and some not-so-good news.

The Ponies boast 10 participants this year an unusually high number but many of those athletes have little experience.

"I think basically we have a pretty decent team," Evenson said. "Ten girls out is more than in many years, but quite a few are young. We have some new people that have to fill in spots."

Evenson has a core of three players whom he will expect to carry this team senior Jessica Sande and juniors Katie Miller and Julie Wagner.

"We have three returning lettermen and have a couple girls who are extremely strong," Evenson said.

Sande tied for first at divisionals last year as a junior, and she is the only senior on the team.

"She's our leader, and I'm looking for her to spearhead the girls," Evenson said.

Sande also benefits by playing golf throughout the summer, and Evenson said that serves as a huge boost to her game.

"If they play summer golf it makes all the difference in the world," Evenson said. "I tell them, Go find a friend and get out there and play in the summer.' If they don't they'll be behind the next year. Maybe so much they don't even make the team."

Evenson believes the trio of Sande, Wagner and Miller will produce positive results this season.

"Those three have been very faithful, and it's going to show this year."
