Sportsmen are reminded to put safety first when hunting gophers this spring and summer.
The Montana Department of Fish, Wildlife and Parks issued a news release Wednesday urging hunters to use caution and warning them of the laws governing firearms in the field.
The FWP release said that hunters need to remember it is unlawful to shoot any firearm from or across the right-of-way of any state or federal highway or county road.
Hunters also are reminded to ask landowners' permission to travel through or hunt on their land. Don't trespass.
Safety requires shooters to be sure of their targets and what lies beyond. "Never shoot when you can't see what's behind the target," the news release said.
