"Welcome to the Fourth Annual Talent Show coming to you from Box Elder public schools." Mrs. Marla Ray, the music teacher at Box Elder schools, organizes the talent show each March to celebrate National Music Month.
"It took a lot of time and a lot of nights after school," said Ray, "but mostly for the kids that participated."
This year there were 55 participants, the most we have ever had, comprising 32 different acts. These participants competed for the top five places for money prizes, but probably more important than that, to showcase their talents.
The crowd of students, parents, relatives and even just community members looking for some entertainment were treated to a variety of different acts. The acts ranged from singing and dancing to acting and playing musical instruments. There were many very talented young students that gave their all to please the crowd this year.
Because of this, the judges must have had a very difficult time deciding on this year's winners. The judges, who were all staff members at Box Elder, were randomly seated throughout the crowd, and their identities were not known to the participants. They were to rank the acts they watched, and the winners were chosen from those that were ranked the highest.
This year's winners were Neal and J.R. Rosette in first place for their musical singing performance. They were the lucky recipients of $50. Taking second place was Andrew Windy Boy for his Native American dancing performance. For his efforts he earned $25. In third place, there was a tie between Tiffany Meiwald and the group of Shane Bacon, Blaine Yellowtail, Jakoy Oats and Garrison Henderson for their singing acts. Colton Koop rounded out the top five for his stand-up routine. All of the contestants performed very well, and we hope to see them there again next year.
A big thank you needs to be sent out to fifth grade teacher Lonnie Johnson for providing the sound and light equipment from his band "Pollo Loco" to add some excitement to the show.
And yes, Mrs. Ray assures us that, "There will be a Fifth Annual Talent Show next year." So, students that plan on participating next year, start practicing now.
