GREAT FALLS Havre track coach John Ita said earlier this week he expected his girls team would defeat Great Falls, and that his boys would at least be competitive with the Bison.
Great Falls had differing opinions on both counts Thursday at Memorial Stadium.
Bison junior Cory Wilmore staked three individual victories, and Great Falls dominated the Ponies in every field event en route to a 110-35 drubbing in the boys' meet.
The Bison girls swept five events, and a threesome of Great Falls athletes claimed two victories apiece in a 99-46 rout of the Ponies.
Havre's Brian Derosa won both hurdle events, winning the 110 hurdles in a time of 16.4 seconds and the 300 hurdles with a 44.6
Steve Heberly, last year's Class A state champion in the 100, claimed first place in that event with a time of 11.6, and teammate Brent Finneman was third at 11.8. Heberly also added a third-place finish in the 200 (23.7).
Havre's 400-meter relay team was first with a 44.1, and then placed second in the 1,600 relay with a 3:40.3.
Joe Roman placed second in the long jump (19-3) and 400 (53.0) for the Ponies.
Havre's Chris Springer (800), Jacob Lorang (pole vault), Justin Kegel (triple jump), Jeff Sprinkle (3,200) and Matt Sasaki (shot put) each netted a third-place finish.
Havre's boys were clearly outmatched and outnumbered in the field events. In the seven field events, the Ponies were able to manage just four total placings in the top three of those events.
Great Falls also displayed a great deal of depth on the girls' side, using the strength in numbers to sweep five events (400, 800, 300 hurdles, javelin, pole vault).
Lashae Michels was a figurative beam of sunlight on an otherwise gloomy afternoon for the Ponies, running and jumping her way to three victories.
Michels, the defending state champion in the triple jump, won that event with a leap of 33-81/4. The senior also won the long jump (16-0) and 200 (27.9).
Havre's Mellisa Haymaker placed first in the discus (114-6), and teammate Jayla McPherson added a win in the shot put (34-6).
Pony sophomore Brooke Schwan was second in the 100 hurdles (18.2) and tied with teammate Amy Ranes for second in the high jump (4-6).
Havre's Alyssa Matter was second in the 100 (13.3) and third in the 200 (28.3). Jen Peterson also managed second- and third-place finishes in the 1,600 (5:39.0) and 3,200 (12:24), respectively.
Havre freshman Rylee O'Connell was third in the 100 (13.5), and Jen Baltrusch was third in the 1,600 (5:39.6).
