HELENA Russell Edward Blom, 89, died Wednesday, April 11, 2001 at a convalescent home in Helena of natural causes.
A prayer vigil will be 7 p.m. Monday at the Holland and Bonine Funeral Chapel. Funeral Mass will be 10 a.m. Tuesday at St. Jude Catholic Church with Fr. Robert D. Grosch officiating. Burial is to follow at
Calvary Cemetery.
Blom was born Dec. 19, 1911 in Burt Township, N.D. to Harry and Lily (Herzog) Blom on the family farm. He was raised in Burt Township and graduated from high school in Minot. After graduation, he worked the family farm.
He married Irene Flom on Oct. 15, 1935 in Minot. He worked for a farm machinery business that brought them to Great Falls. They moved to Havre in 1954.
Blom worked for Farmers Union Oil for several years. He was appointed Hill County Auditor and then spent 20 years as Hill County Clerk and Recorder.
Blom enrolled at Montana State University-Northern in 1989 at the age of 77 and graduated.
He enjoyed golfing, fishing, writing to family and friends and traveling.
Blom was an active member of the community, St. Jude Catholic Church, Knights of Columbus, Fraternal Order of Eagles and Rotary Club.
He was preceded in death by his parents; wife, Irene Blom in 1982; brother, Robert Blom.
Survivors include his daughters, Patty Nelson of Havre, Sally Cole of Whitefish and Mary Margaret Hartman of Helena; sisters, Betty Doyle of Yuma, Ariz. and Helen Duke of Nacogdoches, Texas; brother, Richard Blom of San Antonio, Texas; eight grandchildren; nine great-grandchildren.
Memorials may be made to Havre/Hill County Library or MSU-Northern Scholarship Fund.
Services and arrangements are under the direction of Holland and Bonine Funeral Home.
