If Saturday proved to be any indicator whether KG would be able to successfully defend its two straight Class C track and field state titles, the Kougars seem to be in great shape already in this young season.
KG earned just two victories in individual events, but the Kougars were the only team to score points in every event to blow away the competition in the boys' half of the Havre Invitational track and field meet at Havre Middle School.
The Kougars finished with 152 points, outpacing Class A schools Havre (90) and Lewistown (65).
And as dominant as KG may have been in the boys meet, Havre was even more so on the girls' side.
The Ponies' point totals reached double digits in all but three events as Havre flexed its muscles en route to a 214-point finish. Conrad was a distant second at 78, followed by Sunburst and KG with 61 and 55 points, respectively.
In the boys' meet, KG failed to produce any winners in the running events the Kougars did get five second-place finishes, though but Tel Sterner and Chase Rambo finished 1-2 in the discus and Joey Stuart and Roger Larson achieved the same feat in the triple jump.
Havre's Steve Heberly won the 100, and Grant Roman added a victory in the 400. The Ponies' 400 relay team also earned a victory.
In the girls' meet, Havre's Alyssa Matter and Lashae Michels each tasted victory four times.
Michels set an event record with a jump of 17 feet, 5 inches in the long jump, shattering a 15-year-old record set by Havre's Sheryl Oelke by five inches. She also won the triple jump and was part of the Ponies' victorious 400 and 1600 relay teams.
Matter was a double-winner with victories in the 100 and 100 hurdles and also a member of the Ponies' 400 and 1600 relays.
Matter, Brooke Schwan and Karla McCormick swept the top three places in the 100 hurdles for Havre, Mellisa Haymaker and Jayla McPherson claimed the top two places in the discus, Jen Peterson and Alicia Rundquist finished 1-2 in the 3200, and Matter and O'Connell were first and second in the 100.
Havre's Jillian Brough (800) and Amy Ranes (high jump) also earned wins.
KG's Kim Berg won the javelin and was also second place in the long jump and triple jump.
