KG boys, Chester girls roll to track titles

KouGars Stuart, Chesters Tempel win four events

KG standout Joey Stuart accounted for nearly 25 percent of his team's total points, and the KouGars also had three other athletes score more than 20 points to literally run away with the KG Invitational track and field boys title at Havre Middle School on Wednesday.

The two-time defending Class C champions finished with 165.5 points, well ahead of Chester's 109. Dutton was third (75), Geraldine fourth (48), and Havre's junior varsity team finished fifth (30).

Chester's Maci Tempel and Michele VanDyke combined for 63.5 of their team's 111 points as the Coyotes rolled to the girls' championship.

Chester finished 39 points ahead of the Havre JV squad, which squeaked past Augusta for second place. The Ponies had 72, followed by Augusta's 71.

Stuart finished first in four events 300 hurdles, javelin, triple jump and one-quarter of KG's winning 400 relay team and added a second-place finish in the long jump.

But his effort was certainly not the only one that helped the KouGars cruise the boys' title.

Roger Larson, who scored 27 points, was first in the 400 and the 400 and 1,600 relays. Matt Aageson was first in the 200 and was part of the KouGars' winning 400 and 1,600 relay teams to finish with 23 points. Aaron Smith was also a triple-winner for the KouGars, notching victories in the 1,600, 3,200, and taking part in the 1,600 relay to finish with 22.5 points.

KG's Tyler Kapperud won the 800 and ran in the 1,600 relay

Chester's Jeff Graham, who officially signed a letter-of-intent to play basketball at Montana State University-Northern on Wednesday scored the second-most points (36) onfany individual in the meet. He placed first in the 110 hurdles and added second-place finishes in the 300 hurdles and 400.

Brent Clark added a victory in the pole vault for the Coyotes.

Tempel finished an outstanding afternoon with wins in the 100 and 300 hurdles, as well as participating in the victorious 400 and 1,600 relays, to conclude the meet with 33 points.

She narrowly missed a win in the 400 by just one-tenth of a second, finishing just behind Augusta's Kacey Troy.

VanDyke won the high jump and was also part of the 1,600 relay. She added second-place finishes in the 800 and triple jump and finished with 30.5 points.

Big Sandy's Kathy Bitz was a double-winner with victories in the 800 and 1,600, her teammate Amy Silvan was first in the triple jump, Box Elder's Kristi Pullin won the 200, Kim Berg of KG won the javelin, Blue Sky's Lindsey Letang won the 3,200, and Havre JV's Maureen Porter was first in the pole vault.
