Comets win Kootenai crown

EUREKA The Havre Comets rebounded from a loss in their first game with three consecutive wins to claim the round robin crown at the Kootenai Valley American Legion baseball tournament last weekend.

Havre opened the tournament with a disappointing 6-4 defeat at the hands of the Glacier Twins, but Comets coach Bob Evans said his team began cutting back on its mistakes, and that translated into victories.

"It was a fun weekend, we played really well," Evans said. "We kind of played relaxed (after the first game), and they got it going. The kids stepped up, we played good defense and hit the ball better."

Among the Comets' three victories was a 6-4 win over Mission Valley, handing that team its only loss of the tournament and giving the Comets the title based on a head-to-head tiebreaker.

Dustin Heath, Kyle Sheppard and Tyler Vandermars each had two hits to pace Havre's nine-hit attack against Mission Valley.

Havre amassed 12 hits in an 11-5 win over host Kootenai Valley. Tyson Roe homered, Garrett Drake had three hits, and Sheppard, Heath, Jared Boyce and Mark Benjamin each added two hits for the Comets.

Havre also defeated Libby 8-5 behind Heath's three hits and two hits by Benjamin and Boyce.
