Havre High School graduate Rachael Spangelo captained a mining team from Montana Tech in Butte to victory in an international competition in April
Spangelo was the captain of Tech's coed mining team that won the competition at the International Collegiate Mining Competition, held in Reno, Nev., the weekend of April 13.
Facing mining students from around the world, Spangelo's team competed in seven categories of historical mining skills intended to honor the miners of the past
and teach modern students the history of their chosen trade.
The categories were Swede sawing, hand steeling, jackleg drilling, mucking, track standing, gold
panning and surveying. The competition includes handling 150 pound drills, laying ore car track and sawing through mine timbers.
