Havre splits pair at Medicine Hat

MEDICINE HAT, Alberta After suffering a frustrating 4-1 loss to Medicine Hat in the opener of an American Legion baseball doubleheader Sunday, the Havre Northstars needed a boost in the nightcap.

Jared Boyce provided that boost from both the mound and the plate.

Boyce fired a three-hitter and was also 4-for-4 with two runs scored offensively to lift the Northstars to a 3-0 shutout to earn a split in the twinbill.

Boyce struck out eight and didn't walk a batter in his second-game performance.

He also broke a scoreless tie when he scored the game's first run in the sixth inning on an RBI single by Mike Kellem.

In the seventh, Danny Wirtzberger, who was 3-for-4, led off with a single. Boyce singled one out later to later set up a two-out, two-run single by Garrett Hanson to give Havre an insurmountable 3-0 lead.

Boyce then retired the side in order in the bottom half of the inning to close out the Northstars' victory .

Kellem finished the game 2-for-3 with the RBI.

In the first game, Havre was able to produce just three hits all in the fourth inning to help the Northstars pull even at 1-1. Jordan Anderson doubled, and Boyce followed with an RBI single to account for the run.

But Medicine Hat rallied in the bottom half of the fourth with three runs, taking advantage of a batter hit by a pitch and two base hits.

Kyle Sheppard was solid off the mound for Havre in the loss. He surrendered three hits, struck out six and walked none, but hurt himself with three hit batters.
