Comets bunt way to sweep of Great Falls

In a strange finish to the second game, the Comets scored two runs in the bottom of the eighth inning to complete a sweep of the Great Falls Sparkies Thursday night at Legion Field.

The Comets won the first game of the conference doubleheader 17-8 and came back to win the second game 8-7.

Havre trailed for most of the second game, but battled back and scored one unearned run in the seventh on an error.

After the Sparkies gained a 7-6 advantage with a run in the top of the eighth, the Comets used three consecutive bunts by Ian Spencer, Bobby Bergren and Roe to manufacture runs the old-fashioned way in the bottom half of the inning.

Adam Jensen and Daine Solomon followed with consecutive RBI singles to give the Comets the 8-7 win.

Steve Heberly and Bergren led the Comets, going 3-for-4 and each scoring one run. Cory Junck added a 2-for-4 effort with an RBI and a run scored.

The first game of the doubleheader saw the Comets break out and score 17 runs on just eight hits.

The Comets grabbed an early lead, scoring six runs in the first. But that lead was soon erased when the Sparkies came back in the top of the second with six runs of their own to tie the score.

Except for a scoreless fifth inning, the Comets scored at least two runs in each inning after the first to seize control of the game.

Heberly went 2-for-2 with two walks and three runs scored, and Mark Benjamin went 3-for-4 with two RBI and two runs scored.
