Alta M. Matter, 80, died Tuesday, July 17, 2001 at a Havre care facility of cancer.

Vigil is 7 p.m. Sunday at the St. Jude Catholic Church in Havre. Funeral service is 11 a.m. Monday at the St. Jude Catholic Church with Fr. Robert D. Grosch officiating. Burial is to follow at the Calvary

Cemetery in Havre. There will be a reception in the VFW Club following the burial.

Matter was born Sept. 24, 1920 to George A. and Harriet Lucinda (Dille) Watson at Rosemary, Alberta, Canada. The family moved to Harlem when she was young and she was raised on the farm at Harlem and attended schools there. She graduated from Harlem High School in 1938.

In 1941, she married Ed Matter and they moved to Hogeland and farmed. In 1953, they bought a home in Havre so the children could attend school. She worked on the farm and raised the children.

Matter was active in the Veterans of Foreign Wars Auxiliary and the Catholic Daughters.

She enjoyed crossword puzzles.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Edward Matter, in 1967; granddaughter, Carly Matter, in 1995; great-grandson, Ryder Howie, in 2001.

Survivors include her daughters, Mary Ann Stenske of Irvine, Calif., Kathy Oyen of Chino, Calif., Patty Schwan of Havre, Linda Bretzke of Tuscaloosa, Ala., and Teresa Kjorvested of Polson; sons, Ed Matter, Jim Matter and Bob Matter, all of Havre, and Art Matter of Hogeland; sister, Gladys Pancake of Boise, Idaho; brother, Rex Watson of Hamilton; 27 grandchildren; 18 great-grandchildren.
