Dr. Duncan Stuart MacKenzie Jr., 87, passed away on Oct. 25, 2001, at a Whitefish hospital.
Visitation will be held from Noon to 8 p.m. today at the Austin Funeral Home in Whitefish. Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. on Tuesday at the Austin Funeral Home. Interment will follow at Glacier Memorial Gardens Cemetery in Kalispell with full military honors. A reception will be held at Dr. MacKenzie's home after the graveside service.
A Memorial Service will be held at St. Marks Episcopal Church in Havre at a later date.
He was born on Nov. 14, 1913, in Havre to Dr. D. S. Mackenzie Sr. and Laura Eggers MacKenzie. He attended Havre schools and graduated from Havre High School at 16. He graduated from Northern Montana College and then attended the University of Minnesota Medical School. He graduated in 1936 and did his internship and residency in Rochester, N.Y.
In July of 1938, he began practicing medicine with his father in Havre. He married Marjorie Tellander of Worthington, Minn., on Oct. 12, 1938. He entered the U. S. Army Medical Corps in 1941 and served at Camp Grant, Ill., Panama, and Ft. Lewis, Wash. He was discharged in 1946 after five years of active duty.
Upon returning to Havre, he became one of the founders of the Havre Clinic, joining doctors Charles Houtz, Chester Lawson and David Almas. He was associated with the Havre Clinic for 34 years and nine months. During those years, he was a member of the Montana Medical Association and became a Fellow of the American College of Surgeons in 1951. He was appointed to the State Board of Medical Examiners by Gov. Tim Babcock and served eight years. From 1938 to 1980, he was a doctor for the Great Northern and Burlington Northern railways. Along with serving eight years on the board of Blue Shield, he also served on the boards of the Kennedy Deaconess Hospital, Sacred Heart Hospital, and later the Northern Montana Hospital for a total of 24 years.
He served as the second president of the Havre Jaycees and was a member of the Havre Rotary, Enterprise Lodge No. 134 AF and AM, York Rite Shrine, Elks Lodge, American Legion, and VFW.
He delivered approximately 4,000 babies during his forty-two and one half years of medical practice in Havre. During his early practice, he made house calls on a regular basis.
He was an active member of St. Marks Episcopal Church of Havre, serving several turns on the vestry, and later of the Holy Nativity Episcopal Church of Whitefish.
He was proud of attending the opening day of goose hunting in Malta, Montana, for fifty-two consecutive years, including his last hunt four weeks ago.
People loved Dr. D. S. MacKenzie for his kind nature and sense of humor.
He is survived by his daughter, Janet Klepper and her husband, Don, of Missoula; sons, Stuart MacKenzie and his wife, Shirley, of Chinook and Jim MacKenzie and wife, Norma, of Whitefish; 10 grandchildren, and two great-grandchildren.
Memorials may be made to Holy Nativity Episcopal Church in Whitefish or St. Marks Episcopal Church in Havre.
Arrangements are under the direction of the Austin Funeral Home in Whitefish.
