Fire crews respond to paper fire

The Havre Fire Department responded to a small paper fire inside the old Kmart Building on East Highway 2 shortly before 6 a.m. Wednesday.

Craig Ellingson, Havre fire chief, said this morning a pile of papers had been removed from a file cabinet, placed in a pile on the floor, and ignited.

Very little damage was done by the fire, Ellingson said, and the cause is still under investigation.

"It had almost burnt itself out by the time we got there," he said.

Ellingson said that a window had been broken out of the building to gain entry and the fire appears to have been deliberately set, but he would not speculate as to why.

He said only that the Havre police department would be handling the investigation.

The Police Department was unable to comment on their investigation this morning.
