Early Tuesday morning when Mary Jo Pleskac, a veterinarian assistant at the East Side Animal Hospital, came to work she was startled to find a box in front of the door.
Air holes had been punched in the box and someone had tried to seal the box with tape.
Tape however was not enough and Pleskac found only loose cat hair in the box with more stuck to the tape.
A short time later a stranger stopped at the Hospital and told Pleskac they had noticed a dog chained to a stop sign at the intersection of 38th Avenue Northeast and Highway 2 East.
"The dog had been chained to the stop sign for it looked like at least three hours," Pleskac said, adding that the pup was shivering when it was picked up.
The dog, a yellow Labrador retreiver cross that Pleskac said appeared to be about six months old and possibly pregnant, was picked up by the Havre Police Department and taken to the animal shelter.
Pleskac said she has no idea what happened to the cat that escaped from the box.
"It's tragic," Pleskac said. "There are proper ways to dispose of animals you don't want."
