Northern maintains hold of second place in Frontier
Sharks, piranhas...Skylights?
The Montana State University-Northern women's basketball
team has taken advantage of a late-season surge to propel
itself into second place in the Frontier Conference, and now
that the Skylights taste the blood in the water, they're
hardly going to let go of their place in the standings.
Lana Quintyne returned to her usual dominant self with 17
points, and Abby Hjorth fired in 14 in No. 12 Northern's
68-56 victory over Carroll in a conference matchup last
night at Northern Gym.
Northern improved to 9-4 in the conference with the win and
22-6 overall. Carroll slipped to 7-6 in the Frontier and
15-9 overall.
Northern did not shoot the ball well, finishing the game
21-for-65 (32.3 percent), but the Skylights helped
themselves out with 21 offensive rebounds. Those rebounds
led to 15 second-chance points, compared to just nine for
the Saints.
Paula Owens led the Skylights inside with 11 points and a
team-high nine rebounds.
Quintyne also had five rebounds and five steals for the
Skylights, and Hjorth added four assists and three steals.
The Skylights consistently pressured Carroll's
ballhandlers, forcing the Saints into 21 turnovers.
Northern, meanwhile, committed just 10 turnovers.
Northern was equally aggressive with the basketball,
getting to the foul line 33 times, resulting in 23 points.
Carroll was a dismal 11-for-28 from the line.
Carly VanDyke was the only Carroll player to reach double
figures, finishing with 13 points.
Skylights coach Kevin Emerick announced prior to the game
that guards Anna Fabatz and Davina Shoemake would play but
not start last night's game. Shoemake finished with nine
points, and Fabatz had seven.
