An area residents are cautioned about a Nigerian scam that has apparently moved from the mails to the e-mails.
A complainant notified Hill County Sheriff's personnel shortly before noon Tuesday of the e-mail scam sent to him from Nigeria.
The scam is the same as one carried out in mailings before in which the writer asks the victim to let him transfer his vast fortune into the victim's bank account. The transfer is ostensibly to keep the funds safe during the politically difficult times in Nigeria.
All the writer asks is that the victim give him his banking information and he will allow the victim free access to the money once its in the victim's account.
People are reminded that something that sounds too good to be true probably is. Also, people are cautioned never to give out their personal or financial information to strangers or over the phone or Internet.
This is particularly true, authorities have said, if the residents aren't personally familiar with the people on the other end of the line or did not initiate the contact themselves.
