Havres Michels triple-winner as Ponies win girls championship
Thanks in large part to Joey Stuart and Aaron Smith, the KG boys track and field team has all its bases covered.
Perhaps a baseball reference isn't fitting in a track story, but it's safe to say the KouGars' squad would be much less dangerous without either of those athletes, and in all likelihood, winning a third-straight Class C state title would be much more difficult.
Stuart was a triple-winner and also ran in KG's two winning relays, and Smith added wins in the 1,600 and 3,200 and was part of the victorious 1,600 relay to lead KG to the boys' team title at the Rocky Boy Invitational track meet Saturday at Havre Middle School.
KG outlasted Havre's junior varsity team which, by the way, included several athletes from the Blue Ponies' varsity squad by 17.5 points, 162-144.5. Geraldine was a distant third at 54 points.
Havre's Lashae Michels continued her season-long dominance in the long jump and triple jump and added a win in the 200 to pace the Ponies' team championship in the girls' meet.
Havre's girls blew away the field with 208 points. Conrad was second at 77, followed by Geraldine at 52.
In the boys' meet, Steve Heberly of Havre cruised to victories in the 100 and 200, Havre's Grant Roman held off his brother, Joe, by one-tenth of a second to win the 400, Josh Klabofski and Matt Sasaki gave Havre a 1-2 finish in the shot put, Big Sandy's Mason Ophus won the discus, and KG's Kyle Reynolds won the pole vault.
In the girls' meet, Havre's Alyssa Matter squeaked out wins over teammate Rylee O'Connell in the 100 and 200, Katie Siebrasse earned the Ponies 10 points with a win in the 400, Big Sandy's Sheena Darlington won the 1,600, Havre's Heidi Crawford won the 3,200, Kim Berg of KG won the javelin by nearly 30 feet, and Havre's Amy Ranes won the high jump, edging teammate Jeri Matter by one inch for first place.
Havre also won both relays in the girls' meet.
