The Havre 1 team took fifth in close competition at the 2001 Montana State BB Gun Match on April 6-8 in Havre, Cliff Plum, match chair said in a press release.
The Havre team earned 2,190 points in the match. Laurel 1 took first with 2,250 points, Glendive 1 second with 2218, Belgrade G third with 2202 and Belgrade B beat Havre for fourth by one point, earning 2191. Individual awards were given to Chris Webster of the Glendive 1 team for top gun and Michael Herman, Laurel 1, for top tester.
The top three teams qualify to compete in the national event, which will be in Colorado Springs, Colo., next fall.
The match, sponsored by the Montana Jaycees as part of their Shooters' Education program and the Daisy BB gun company, was hosted by the Havre Jaycees, starting with registration Friday evening, April 6, with competition and written testing done all day Saturday, April 7, and continuing into Sunday, April 8.
There were 93 competitors in the event on 15 teams, with six organizations participating. Chuck Nottingham was the match director, helping resolve any disputes over the rules. Jim Griggs was range officer on Saturday and Bob Doney was range officer on Sundae. Cindy Gabbert was in charge of the score room.
Many of the Montana Jaycees 2001 board members participated as officials at the match, including President Tami Christensen from Sidney, Executive Vice President Ginny Katzenberger from Billings, Community Development Vice President Susan Barta from Lewistown, Chairman of the Board Cindy Gabbert from Glendive and Region Two Director Ross Moritz from Conrad.
Trophies and medallions were donated by the Bullhook Bottoms Black Powder Club, the award ribbons were donated by the Havre Rifle and Pistol Club and Lee Laeupple donated the participation ribbons.
Money raised at the match will be used to help send the three top teams to Nationals.
