Northstars split with Great Falls

Wirtzberger hits home run in win

GREAT FALLS Danny Wirtzberger was 2-for-3 with a home run and three RBI to help the Havre Northstars defeat Great Falls 8-5 in the opener of an American Legion baseball twinbill Saturday.

Great Falls earned a split with a 7-6 victory in the second game.

Kyle Sheppard had a two-run single in the first game, and Jordan Anderson and Garrett Hanson each added run-scoring singles for the Northstars.

Dustin Heath also had a triple and scored twice for Havre, which finished with nine hits.

David Knight pitched five innings for the win, allowing five runs four earned and three walks. He struck out five.

Eric Lipp came on in relief in the sixth, pitching two innings to pick up the save. He gave up three hits and a walk, but didn't allow a run.

In the nightcap, Sheppard was 3-for-3 with two doubles and an RBI for Havre.

Anderson added a 2-for-4 effort with a double and two runs scored, Heath had a two-run single, and Wirtzberger added a double for the Northstars.

Doug Ireland pitched a complete game in a losing effort for Havre. He struck out six, scattered seven hits and issued just one walk.
