Benjamins three hits leads Comets to win in opener
Mark Benjamin went 3-for-4 and drove in two runs, and Tyler Thompson pitched a complete game to lead the Havre Comets to a 12-2 win over Lewistown in the first game of an American Legion baseball doubleheader Sunday at Legion Field.
Lewistown came back to win the second game 8-6 to earn the split.
In the first game, Adam Jensen, Daine Solomon and Ben Mader each collected two hits for the Comets, who finished with 14 hits off Lewistown pitchers.
Every Havre player collected at least one base hit in the first game.
Benjamin tripled and had a double, Solomon added a triple and two walks, and Chris Chandler had a double for the Comets.
Thompson gave up five hits, struck out four and issued a walk in his five innings.
In the second game, Ian Spencer was 2-for-3, and Solomon, Garrett Drake, Cory Junck each went 2-for-4 for the Comets.
Solomon and Drake each scored twice, and Steve Heberly added two runs batted in for Havre.
Benjamin, Drake, Solomon and Junck each tripled once.
The Comets were hampered defensively by four errors, leading to two unearned runs one each off Havre starter Mader and reliever Tyson Roe.
Roe, who gave up three runs in three innings, took the loss for the Comets.
The Comets will play the Havre Northstars on Wednesday at 7 p.m. at Legion Field.
