Havre claims boys and girls titles at Dillon
DILLON Heading into the Class A state golf tournament set for Tuesday and Wednesday in Anaconda, the Havre boys and girls are playing their best golf of the year.
That translated into respective team titles for the Ponies at the Central A Divisional tournament Saturday at Beaverhead Country Club.
Nick Obie held off teammate Trent Normandy for medalist honors in boys' play with a playoff win on the second hole, leading the Blue Ponies to a final score of 298, 15 strokes ahead of second-place Dillon.
Obie and Normandy each finished with individual scores of 73.
Havre's Jessica Sande fired an 82 and won a playoff against Anaconda's Katie Kuffner on the second hole to stake medalist honors in the girls' tournament, pacing Havre's three-stroke win over Dillon for the team championship.
Havre finished with a team score of 381.
In the boys' tournament, Havre's Troy Toner and Jason Johnstone each scored a 78 to place in the top 10, and Kevin Harada fired an 82.
"I expected the boys to do well, and they did," Havre coach Keith Evenson said. "It was the best score they had this year."
The same could be said of the Havre girls, and Evenson said he was "really pleased" with their effort.
Julie Wagner of Havre finished fourth with an 86, and Katie Miller gave the Ponies a third player in the top 10 with a final score of 103.
Also for Havre's girls, Mikyla Veis and Alysia Kato shot a 109 and 123, respectively.
Havre will shoot a practice round today in preparation for the first round of the two-day state tournament beginning Tuesday.
