Northstars survive for 5-4 victory

Ireland strikes out eight in complete-game effort

Doug Ireland threw a complete game, scattering two runs and nine hits over seven innings to lead the Havre Northstars to a 5-4 win over Kate Andrews in an American Legion baseball game last night at Legion Field.

Kyle Sheppard was the top hitter for Havre with a 2-for-4 effort and two RBI.

The first five batters in the Northstars' lineup finished a combined 6-for-14 (.428 batting average).

Ireland struck out eight seven of them swinging and walked just one for Havre in the non-conference contest.

Also for Havre, Jared Boyce, Mike Kellam and Dustin Heath each drove in a run.

Havre head coach Mickey Williams helped his team's cause with a great deal of small ball. The Northstars had three sacrifice bunts in the game.
