Comets sweep Sparkies

Hitting, pitching come together for Havre in 11-1, 8-3 ambush of GF

GREAT FALLS Riding on the coattails of solid hitting and steady pitching the Havre Comets won both games of an American Legion doubleheader Monday night against the Great Falls Sparkies at Olsen Field.

The Comets won the first game 11-1 and completed the sweep with a 8-3 win in the nightcap.

After Great Falls scored a run to close within 2-1 in the bottom half of the first, Havre's Brian Childree and Steve Heberly led off the second with back-to-back walks. Both would later score on a double by Cory Junck to give the Comets a 4-1 lead.

Havre added another run in the inning on a two-run double by Ian Spencer to go ahead 6-1 and gain a comfortable lead.

Junck went 3-for-4 with two doubles and three RBI, and Spencer and Adam Jensen each finished the game 2-for-4 with two RBI for the Comets.

Havre starter Tyler Thompson gave up just five hits in six innings, striking out three and walking one.

In the second game, Havre scored three runs in the fourth to erase a 3-1 deficit and take the lead before tallying four more runs in the sixth to put the game away.

Havre came back in the fourth behind four hits and two Sparkies errors.

Heberly and Junck each had an RBI in the inning Heberly's on a sacrifice fly and Junck's on a single.

In Havre's four-run sixth, Daine Solomon and Bobby Bergren each had an RBI double, and Thompson had an RBI single to give the Comets a seven-run edge.

Ben Mader was solid off the mound for the Comets, pitching six innings of four-hit ball and striking out one against one walk.

Jensen came in and pitched a perfect seventh inning for Havre to end the game.
