Comets split doubleheader with Miners; Sparkies next

LETHBRIDGE, Alberta Moments after falling short in a game in which opportunities came and went, the Havre Comets put things together just in time to salvage a road win Tuesday night.

Havre came back from a frustrating 6-3 loss in the opener to defeat Lethbridge 7-6 in the nightcap of an American Legion doubleheader.

In the second game, Steve Heberly scored on a ground out by pitcher Cory Junck to give Havre a 1-0 first-inning lead.

Ian Spencer, who was 2-for-4, hit an RBI double to spark a four-run inning for the Comets and push the team's lead to 5-0.

After Lethbridge cut the gap to 5-3 with three runs in the fourth, Havre put the game out of reach with two more runs in the sixth to take a 7-3 advantage.

The Miners scored three runs in the sixth to close within one, but reliever Ben Mader recorded five outs to preserve the lead and earn the save.

Garrett Drake was 2-for-2 with two runs scored for Havre.

In the first game, Lethbridge obliterated a two-run deficit when the Miners erupted for five runs in the sixth inning to take a 6-3 lead.

Lethbridge capitalized on four hits, two walks and an error to account for the five-run outburst.

For Havre, Heberly led off the third inning with a single and was sacrificed to second by Drake. Junck and Spencer followed with back-to-back RBI singles to help Havre grasp a 2-0 lead.

Jensen led off the fourth inning for Havre with a single and would later score on a single by Heberly, making the score 3-0.

The Comets were led by Spencer, who went 3-for-3 with two singles, a double, a walk and an RBI. Heberly added two singles, an RBI and one run scored.

Havre was scheduled to compete in a tournament in Great Falls, but that event has since been canceled. The Comets will host the Great Falls Sparkies tonight in a 5 p.m. doubleheader at Legion Field.
