GREAT FALLS Jean McVey, 86, died Friday, July 13, 2001 from lung cancer.

Her ashes were interred in Missoula with a grandson's ashes.

A memorial service was held Sunday afternoon at Schnider Funeral Home Fellowship Hall in Great Falls.

McVey was born June 25, 1915 in Great Falls to Elizabeth Olsen. She spent her childhood on a homestead 12 miles north of Havre and attended schools north of Havre and in North Dakota and Illinois.

She married Rowatt Callagahan in Chinook. They later divorced.

She married Ray Cullen. When that marriage ended in divorce, she married Ray McVey.

McVey was proud of her Norwegian heritage and loved homemade things and old-fashioned ways. She was known to take in stray people and animals and was a mentor to many.

McVey was preceded in death by her husband, Ray McVey, in 1957; sister, Helen Vanberg; brothers, Vern Bennett and Robert Perry; grandson, Vern Baker.

Survivors include her sons, Joe Callagahan of Phillipsburg, Glenn Callagahan of Longview, Wash., Ron McVey of Great Falls, Mark McVey of Clinton, Max McVey of Missoula; daughters, Marilyn Smith of Spokane, Wash., Connie Wellington of Great Falls, and Vicki Williams of Honca Path, S.C.
