The people of the Hi-Line have reponded with generous spirits and pocketbooks in the wake of the tragedies that have mobilized our nation. While we're doing that, we can't overlook our needs at home.
The United Way of Hill County is trying to meet its goal of raising $110,000 for local organizations that provide vital services to those who need them in our own community.
One way United Way raises money is with its annual payroll deduction program. We hope that employees here give some of their pay to help others here at home.
Two other fund-raisers are going on. Local merchants are selling "United We Stand" T-shirts depicting the American flag for $10. A total of $4 of that is going to the local business that provided the shirts. The rest is going to the local United Way campaign.
The United Way of Hill County is also going to repeat last year's Monday Night Football fund-raiser. The event, originally scheduled for this month, will be on Nov. 12 at Boxcars. That's the night of the Titans-Ravens game. The local United Way is attempting to obtain donated items from the Tennessee and Baltimore teams, as well as the Minnesota Vikings, the Green Bay Packers and the Pittsburgh Steelers, to use as door prizes or to auction. Last year the Packers sent an autographed football. This will be a really fun event.
Meanwhile, local people are continuing their efforts to raise money for the national disaster relief effort. We can help them out too. So far only 30 people have signed up for the community Walk for Peace, set for 10 a.m. Saturday, with registration beginning at 9 a.m. You can preregister at Bear Paw Credit Union.
The organizers are hoping people realize that the word "peace" in the name of the walk doesn't mean they oppose the current attacks in Afghanistan. Rather it refers to peace in the hearts of the victims of the terrorist attacks in the United States.
