The Havre girls cross country team took advantage of three runners placing in the top 10 Saturday afternoon at the Montana State University-Northern's campus to come away with the Central A Divisional title.
Havre not only had the third, fourth and fifth place runners, but also had the 11th and 12th finishers to run away with the first-place trophy.
Havre head coach Kim Ray said since the divisional meet is not sponsored by the Montana High School Association, Havre had to buy the trophies for the weekend, which may have been motivation for her girls to run well.
"They kind of joked about it all week," she said. "They wanted to keep the trophy here since we paid for it."
Lewistown, who Havre focused on beating all week, also had three girls in the top 10, but Havre's 11th and 12th runners finished ahead of the Eagles' fourth runner, sealing the win for the Ponies.
"Katie Siebrasse did a wonderful job of finally finishing ahead of Lewistown's top runner and so did Alicia Rundquist," Ray said.
Ray also mentioned Jenna Baltrusch's fourth-place finish, taking nearly 40 seconds off her time from last week.
"Jenna is going to help us a lot at state," Ray said mentioning that Baltrusch said she "got that feeling back" Saturday. "She looks like her old self out there. She just needs to be confident."
Alicia Rundquist finished third overall with a time of 20:24.9, followed by Baltrusch in fourth (20:49) and Katie Siebrasse in fifth (20:57.6). Maureen Porter finished in 11th and 12th with times of 21:24.9 and 21:37.6, respectively. Shannon Newth took 17th for the Ponies with a 21:58.3 and Emily Kostelecky, running in her first varsity race, placed 23rd with a time of 23:18.2.
"Shannon finally ran under a 22," Ray said. "They looked real determined to stay together and ran an excellent race. It was a real positive meet for the kids to end on going into state. I am really proud of the team."
Ray also said she was impressed with her team not giving up points and seconds at the line, something they struggled with last week. Ray said the girls need to continue that trend to be competitive next weekend.
"If they stick together as close as they did this weekend, we'll be sitting good for next weekend," she said.
