HAYS Sherman Jones, Eagle Soaring Man, Na Gha De Ya He Ne Gib Hots Enain, 45, an enrolled member of the Gros Ventre Tribe of the Fort Belknap Indian Reservation, went to the other side Thursday morning at a Havre hospital.
Wake services will be held Sunday. Rosary will be held at 7 p.m. at the Hays Mission Recreation Gym. His funeral will be at 11
a.m.
Monday at the Hays Mission Gym with burial following at the Landusky Cemetery.
Sherman was born at Fort Belknap Agency to Helen "Tuffy" Marie Striker and James "Jimmy" C. Jones, Sr. Sherman grew up in Hays and lived in numerous places including Seattle, Portland, Ore., and Missoula, moving back to Havre and Harlem area in 1997. Sherman and his first wife, Henrietta "Etsy" Cochran Jones were soul mates from the beginning. They both held the name "Bird." Etsy's Indian name was "Bird Woman" and Sherman's nickname at boarding school was "Bird."
Sherman was a very tender, caring human being. He was gifted and held and shared many talents. He enjoyed playing guitar, cooking, singing, telling stories, painting, serving as a mechanic and carpenter. Sherman loved to laugh. He was talented in an artistic way expressing this way in Indian arts and crafts. His greatest love in life was his grand children and helping his favorite daughter in law, Lucy Shortman Jones. Sherman left in the midst of teaching his Grandson, Marcus, the guitar. His presence will be greatly missed by all of his grand children. Sherman was a good listener. He was a good friend and a considerate and loyal person. He held great respect for his mother, Helen. He was always present whether his mom needed to have pictures placed on the wall, or whether she needed to have furniture moved. His greatest delight was to care for his family and keep his family happy.
Sherman held our spiritual ways of knowing and being in high respect. He danced at the Lodge Pole Sun Dance and his special cousin, Allen Dale Cliff, will fulfill his sun dance commitment for three more years.
He was preceded in death by his beloved first wife, Henrietta "Etsy" Cochran Jones; his Father, James C. Jones Sr., his grandparents, John and Katie Stiffarm, Cecil and Eva Jones, great grandparents, James and Tavie Kipp; grandfather Bernard Striker; four uncles, two aunts.
Sherman is survived by his mother, Helen Striker Bell; four sons, Thomas Kipp Jones, Jarell Jones, Levi Little Moustache and Jason Charlo; three daughters, Jessie, Jerilyn, and Violet Jones; three brothers, James Stiffarm, Kim Jones, and Eric Jones; two sisters, Funny Jones and Jackie Yellowtail; four adopted brothers, Ken LaCompt, Davy Belgarde, Buzz Blackcrow, Jay DuBois and Rudy Yellowtail; 21 aunts and uncles; numerous cousins, nephews, nieces and relatives.
