The Havre School Board is looking into the possibility of turning Devlin Elementary School into a youth activity center.
The board Tuesday asked Havre School Superintendent Kirk Miller to tell an ad hoc committee to continue pursuing the possibility of using part of Devlin as a Boys and Girls Club. The committee is made up of representatives of HELP, District IV of the Human Resources Development Council, Hill County Extension and the Havre Ministerial Association.
Some board members had questions and words of caution. Chairman Jim Heberly asked Miller if the new use would cause liability problems for the district and also wondered what would happen if the school district needed to use the building in the future.
"I don't want to throw a wet blanket on this. I think it's a great idea," he added.
Miller said the district has liability issues with the building even if it doesn't lease it for a youth center.
"Personally, I'd like to see that facility put to use as soon as possible," he said. "It was built to hold kids and that's what the Boys and Girls Club does."
