Warmer at 20, wind or no wind

Howdy Beaver

By Alkali Springs Correspondent

Another beautiful week in the beautiful Bear Paws and you know it was actually more like late fall than winter this last week. We couldn't believe it before that. No wind and temperatures in the 60s for day after day. Why, even our flies came back.

But then Thanksgiving came and colder weather and the flies all disappeared, hopefully not to return until the geese come back next spring!

And there were days that even snow fell. That is remarkable because we began to think that this year was going to be abnormally warm all the way through.

Now don't get us wrong. Even though the weather folks were predicting cold, their idea of cold is all relative. We think of cold as below zero. They think of cold as temperatures in the teens and 20s. Why, many is the time that we have prayed for a warm wave and temperatures that would go up to the teens and 20s.

So everything is relative. They are predicting cold because in their world 20s are colder than 60s. Not in our world.

And also noteworthy, as long as we are picking on weather reporters, is the fact that this year weather people have modified their dire wind chill temperatures. Seems as though finally they have decided that wind chill numbers used up until this year were way off and too radical.

We have been saying that for years. To say that because the wind is blowing and it is 20 above, that it is really 40 below is just plain dumb. It is just another way our government has of causing everyone to have grave doubts about their collective sanity.

Over and over we have said that if there had been wind chill mongers screaming their dire lines during the time of our pioneers, they would have all left for home and the Native Americans would not be far behind. All would have been left to the buffalo and wolves. Now there are some who would say that wouldn't have been all bad.

But for those who like Havre the way it is today, they can rest assured it is that way thanks to wind chills not being invented by those progressive pioneers.

So now they tell us that they were wrong in their wind chills but these new figures are correct. To find all that out, one would have to go out with no clothes on to research the subject, for wind chills are measured against bare skin. Isn't that crazy?

And getting back to that day that it is 20 above and the wind is blowing. With the new figures it is not 40 below anymore, only 30 below! Well, yippy dippy! For us, it is a balmy 20 above and we are going to enjoy the moment!
