Blue Ponies strike gold at Mining City

By Kim Staudinger

The Mining City Duals held in Butte this last weekend are often a good way for coaches to tell early on where their team stands among other teams in the state.

This weekend was no different than any other for the dominate Havre team as three Ponies were named as outstanding wrestlers. Jeff Hedges, Chad Hedges and Garrett Hanson each came away with the award after going 6-0 on the weekend.

"We've never had three kids named outstanding wrestler," Havre head coach Scott Filius said, noting in his six years at Havre he has had maybe three wrestlers total receive the award. "It was nice to get three at once."

The true success and dedication of the Havre wrestlers was told Monday afternoon at practice when Hanson and Jeff and Chad Hedges all said that even with the good weekend, they still have a lot of work to do.

"We have a lot of room to improve," Chad Hedges, a senior, said.

Hanson agreed with Chad, saying, "Our conditioning needs to get better. It's still pretty early (to tell where Havre stands). We didn't get to see a lot of Class A teams there."

Havre started off slow on Friday, but were the strong Ponies as usual on Saturday, leaving Filius to believe his team should be "right in the middle of the pack" after this weekend.

"Friday we wrestled below par," Filius said. "Saturday we had a great turnaround. I'm real happy with the way we came back. You go down there and expect a lot of mistakes, but by the end of the weekend, you hope to make less and we did."

Filius also said he was impressed with the fact that Jake Szudera and K.P. Fisher battled back and wound up defeating state champions from last year.

"We started out slow. We could have beat Bozeman, but we didn't show up the first day, but came back the second day," Szudera said. "I think we'll be pretty tough. We gear up for the tough teams. We're up at the top probably with Libby and Corvalis."

Jeff Hedges, the other outstanding wrestler nominated at Butte, agreed with his teammates, saying, "We had a rocky start, but we smoothed things out and finished on a high note."

Havre's next meet is Friday and Saturday at the CMR Holiday Classic in Great Falls.
