Carl "Bear" Sangrey, 77 and a Pearl Harbor survivor, died Monday. Dec. 10, 2001, at a Havre hospital of natural causes.
Wake service was 4 p.m. Tuesday at Our Savior Lutheran Church in Rocky Boy. Rosary is scheduled for 7 p.m. today at Our Savior Lutheran Church. Funeral dervice is 10 a.m. Thursday at Our Savior Lutheran Church with the Rev. Ruth Votaw officiating. A military graveside service will follow at the Rocky Boy Cemetery.
Carl was born Feb. 2, 1924, to Dan and Helen (Courchane) Sangrey at Rocky Boy. He attended schools at both Rocky Boy and Fort Hall, Idaho. On Feb. 24, 1942, Carl entered the U.S. Army and served his country in World War II. He was a searchlight operator and served in the Southern Philippines. On Nov. 8, 1945, Carl was honorably discharged as a private first class. He married Katherine Salois; the couple later divorced. In 1955, he married Norma Jarvey; the couple later divorced. In 1976, he married Irene Belcourt at Rocky Boy. Carl worked for the Bureau of Indian Affairs at Rocky Boy, the Roads Department at Rocky Boy, and the smelter in Great Falls, as well as other jobs.
Carl's hobbies included fishing, rodeos, playing poker machines, visiting with his friends and family, riding horses, and playing his guitar.
He was preceded in death by his parents; sisters Irene Morsette and Synove Jarvey; and son Phillip Sangrey.
He is survived by his wife, Irene Belcourt Sangrey of Box Elder; daughters, Sandra McWilliams of Great Falls, Paula Ashley of Ohio, Carol Franco of Great Falls, Susie Olson of Great Falls, Diane Cummings of Great Falls, Leota Green of Elko, Nev., seven stepdaughters; sons, Carl Sangrey Jr. of Missoula; Gerald Sangrey of Great Falls; seven stepsons; sisters, Ethel Azure of Great Falls, Pauline Briere of Rocky Boy, Cecelia Wells of Rocky Boy, Lora St. Marks of Rocky Boy; brothers, Irving Sangrey of Great Falls, James "Sham" Sangrey of Box Elder; numerous nieces and nephews; numerous grandchildren; and numerous great-grandchildren.
Memorials in Carl's honor may be made to the Veterans Hospital, 1417 Ninth St. S, Great Falls MT 59405, or the American Cancer Society, c/o Charlotte Kelley, Star Route 36, Box 22K, Havre, MT 59501, to to the organization of a person's choice.
