We're all for national security.
But on the other hand, we also like our fishing.
It's come to our attention that the access road to the Milk River fishing access right below Fresno Dam has been closed by the federal Bureau of Reclamation as part of a national effort to secure federal properties in the wake of the terrorist attacks. The Bureau of Reclamation is in charge of Fresno.
There doesn't seem to be much practical reason for closing the access road. The dam is still accessible even though the fishing access at the Fresno tailwater is blocked. And if someone were to target the dam, well, there seems to be too little water in it to make much of a difference to us downstream people anyway.
Tongue in cheek aside, the Bureau of Reclamation is taking a look at how it secures all of its facilities. This seems to be one of those cases where the squeaky wheel will get the grease. Let's let the bureau know what we think about their road closure and maybe they'll reconsider soon.
You can reach the bureau at (406) 247-7298.
