While the score of Thursday night's dual meet between Montana State University-Northern and Northwest College came out in favor of the Lights, Northern head coach David Ray used words like disappointing and frustrating to describe the meet.
His team won the meet 34-6 and improved to 8-0 in dual meets on the season.
"I'm not happy with the dual at all," Ray said. "We have certain guys who looked real good. We're a team. We can't have half our guys looking good and half our guys looking bad. That won't win you big tournaments."
Assistant coach Terry Brands also was frustrated. "We got out-fought in every match but three. That's 70 percent."
The Lights had eight stalling calls against them, compared with two for Northwest. Ray said he couldn't understand his wrestlers' lack of aggression.
"We're ahead 16-4 and we're getting called for stalling," he said. "It doesn't make sense."
The fans who stayed until the end of the dual saw perhaps one of the best matches of the night. Dane Jacobsen was competing in his first meet of the season and took only 2:22 to pin Greg Glodt of Northwest.
"That was fun," Ray said. "I figured he would pin the kid. I'm glad he got the pin. It was nice for him to get the win."
Also getting big wins for the Lights were Caleb Schaeffer, Emmett Willson and Kyle Fisher with technical falls and Tyson Thivierge, who won by pinning Casey Parry in 4:24. Thivierge improved to 27-3 on the season with the win and Willson to 22-5.
"Caleb Schaeffer was real intense with the technical fall," Ray said. "He looked good."
Ray said Schaeffer, Thivierge and Willson are carrying the team right now, followed by Fisher and Jacobsen.
Eric Dunmire and Trevor Floerchinger also picked up wins for the Lights, while Bobby Mantle and Dustyn Azure were handed losses.
"Azure's 1-5 in his last six matches," Ray said. "He's more worried about losing than doing the things he needs to win.
"Everything from now on is mental."
The Lights left this morning for the Dickinson State Invitational tournament in Dickinson, N.D. The tournament begins at 10 a.m. Saturday. The Lights will be at home again on Thursday facing Ricks College and on Saturday taking on Western Wyoming College. Both duals are set for 7 p.m.
