Chavez puts on show in Browning win

Browning senior Mike Chavez started Friday night's game with a furious pace.

Chavez scored Browning's first 11 points in just over three minutes and had 15 total in the first quarter.

While the Havre High Blue Ponies (3-13) slowed that pace somewhat during the game, the highly touted Chavez still scored 37 points as Browning (16-1) raced past Havre 96-63.

"We couldn't stop him," Havre coach Mark West said. "They went to him every time."

Havre held Chavez to just one free throw in the second quarter before he exploded for 12 more points in the third. He added nine more in limited playing time in the fourth to lead Browning.

Down by just five at the half, the Ponies had their chances to stay with Browning, but the always crucial third quarter once again hurt Havre. Browning outscored the Ponies 27 to 16 in the quarter, taking a 16-point lead into the fourth.

Struggling with the Indians' press, the Ponies could not put a dent in the Browning lead.

While the attention was mainly focused on Chavez, Havre senior Titus Pedraza had a great game of his own. Pedraza finished with 25 points in the contest before coming out late after hurting his knee.

"Titus played defensively and offensively the best game by far he's ever played," West said. "He helped raise our intensity up."
